Precision Nutrition puts out some of the most sensible, balanced, factual diet information around. This is their article about one of the newest diet trends – the ketogenic, or “keto” high fat diet. Ketogenic eating is an extreme way of eating that may have benefits to some, but also comes with a significant downside.
As the charts in this article show, there are three macronutrients in our meals. Eating higher in fat therefore means that you will be eating lower in carbohydrate and/or protein. Alternatively, when you eat higher in protein, one or both of the other two (fat and carbohydrate) must go down.
Precision Nutrition’s bottom line is the same as mine – if you’re curious about a way of eating then try it. But don’t buy into the belief that it’s the only or best way for health or weight loss.
I will add that you don’t have to be rigid or “all in” to experiment with different ways of eating. That is, you can eat lower carb, or higher fat, without eating no carbs or only fat.
