The recent positive publicity about health at every size and rethinking obesity has a dark side according to the author of this opinion piece. The problem is creating a two-tiered system with less judgment for fat people exhibiting behavior deemed healthy and more judgment for those seen eating or sitting around. Her very good point is that all people and all bodies deserve respect.

Trying to prove you’re “one of the good ones” is a survival tactic. All fat people are trying to survive in a fat-hating world, and respectability politics can offer a form of protection. Unfortunately, it also feeds the idea that there are some fat people who don’t deserve decency and kindness.

This is a well needed reminder in our divided world. It’s simple – practice respect for yourself and everyone else.
