It’s long been thought that when diabetes occurs in adulthood it’s always Type 2 which is affected by diet, activity, and weight. But new research shows that Type 1 diabetes can also develop in adulthood. And this form of diabetes requires different treatment. Waiting for dietary changes or weight loss to occur could be damaging if your diabetes is Type 1, so it’s important to get the correct diagnosis.
Each year, somewhere between tens of thousands and hundreds of thousands of patients are likely misdiagnosed with Type 2 diabetes when they in fact have Type 1. The consequences can be dire. Without proper treatment, Type 1 diabetes can quickly become life threatening.
