This is one woman’s take on what it’s like to live in a fatphobic world.
She clearly demonstrates how our culture is detrimental to the mental and physical health of women with body fat. It leads to self hate which is never motivational. It causes shame that leads to avoiding encounters with the health care system. And, even more dangerous is when every symptom and condition is dismissed as only showing that you need to lose weight.
It’s high time to substitute compassion and empathy – for ourselves and others.
I have seen the mental health of friends torn to shreds by strangers on the internet and I have seen fat women slip back into dangerous eating disorder behaviours as a result, but never have I ever seen any health-concerned stranger talk about how this relates to our mental health.
